As #ffotonsocial evenings go, this one is a bit special - so we don't want you to miss it!
We're nearing the end of April and our #ffotonsocial will have two treats for those able to join us from 6.30pm in Cardiff:
6.30pm - doors open (we'll be around from 6pm)
7pm - 7.45pm - understanding and converting RGB files to CMYK for print
8pm - 9.15pm - screening of 'Encounters with Strangers: The photography of Niall McDiarmid' film.
We've announced previously that we're arranging a photo 'zine meet' during The EYE International Photography Festival in Aberystwyth this October but we've now created a new dedicated Zine page on our website with further news and plans.
We're kicking off April's #ffotonsocial with a talk by Dominic Lee, Creative Director at Gemini Digital Colour who will give advice and some essential tips for preparing your RGB image files for CMYK printing via short-run Digital presses - the quality from which just keeps getting better as technology advances and is sometimes hard to distinguish from traditional and more expensive offset litho.
As a follow-up to this session, our July #ffotonsocial will include a related talk that will focus on design and layout tips for zine production. These sessions aim to equip photographers with more understanding and confidence in preparing their images for book or zine printing on their own - or in collaboration with a designer.
If you have any zines in your collection - your own creations or purchased - bring them along on the night, we'd love to see them!
We're excited to unveil our new film of photographer Niall McDiarmid in discussion with Daniel Meadows during a break from hanging his current show in The Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol. This will be the first public screening of Encounters with Strangers: The photography of Niall McDiarmid.
This film offers some unique and in-depth insight on Niall's approach to street portraiture as well as very probing questions from Daniel. See the short excerpt below for a taster...
Ffoton had exclusive access to the Martin Parr Foundation's gallery space during the final stages of Niall's work being hung for his 'Town to Town' exhibition which accompanied a new book of the same name.
And we were delighted that the great Daniel Meadows accepted our invitation to talk with Niall about his work and approach to capturing street portraits of the many varied characters he met in towns around the UK. Their work may be decades apart - but this unique discussion between Niall and Daniel reveals not only similarities in style but also their approach to engaging with complete strangers on the street to capture unique records of the characters, fashion and setting that make up UK society at a given time.
Don't miss this detailed exploration of Niall's work and fantastic conversation between two of the UK's most important photography documentarians.
73 magical minutes long.
We will also have a copy of Niall's latest book 'Town to Town' available to browse on the evening.
So lots to see learn and watch at this special #ffotonsocial. Join us from 6.30pm for a 7pm start in...
