Apprehensive about committing your photography to the printed page?
High quality yet low quantity zines and booklets have never been more affordable to publish and share your own photography and projects with friends and clients.
This seminar will walk you through the design and production stages of creating artwork ready for professional (and headache-free) printing!

In advance of the Ffoton #zineswap planned in collaboration with the Northern EYE Photography Festival taking place 12-13 October 2019 in Colwyn Bay, Ffoton’s Brian Carroll aims to dispel the fears of photographers approaching the design, layout and professional printing of their own photography - whether for small, low cost and low quantity zines or planning for higher quality photo books.

This 4 hour seminar will unpack concept; design look and feel; selection and preparation of RGB photographs and assets to print-ready CMYK format; typography & images; layout; and final artwork for print. Attendees should leave the seminar with the confidence and knowledge to plan and design their own photography zines and/or books and have more understanding to collaborate more effectively with both professional graphic designers and commercial printers.

The seminar will consist of illustrated examples, demonstration and walk-through of key functionality in software packages readily available for Mac and PC platforms. Attendees need only bring along a notebook and pen - the seminar facilitator will be the only person using a computer.

WHAT & WHERE?

WHO?

The seminar is designed and delivered by Ffoton co-founder Brian Carroll - a professional graphic designer working in print and video. He designed and produced Ffoton’s #urbanwales 2017 and #portraitcymru 2019 zines; and more recently launched Offline Journal - Wales’ only printed journal documenting the development of contemporary photography in, from and of Wales.

Spaces are limited to ten people and cost £50.00* per person.
Venue: Indycube, Saint Line House, Mount Stuart Square, Cardiff Bay CF10 5LR
10am - 2pm, Friday 9th August 2019.

Train and bus services run regularly from Cardiff city centre to the Bay. Parking available in nearby Mermaid Quay NCP car park.

*Bottled water will be provided. Attendees may wish to bring a packed lunch or snack to avoid leaving the venue, although shops are located a short walk away on nearby Bute Street. Comfort breaks will be scheduled on the day.

As a follow-up to the seminar, attendees will have the opportunity in late August to individually discuss any queries and progress of their own zine production in a one-to-one session with Brian via Skype. This should assist with any last minute tweaks or modifications prior to sending artwork to print.
