Aber Musicians-Live!
Portraits of musicians and singers in Aberystwyth

Aberystwyth-based photographer Alan Hale has been capturing a range of images from the town's lively “popular” music scene, and has brought together a selection for a new exhibition on show through January 2017 in the Crimson Rhino Cafe.

The photographs in this collection were mainly taken at Rummers Bar, with some from the Big Tribute and others from the Town Carnival. The performers mainly live locally, with a few exceptions: “Hinterband”, was an ad-hoc band formed by some of the cast and crew of the TV series “Hinterland”,which was filmed in and around Aberystwyth. One of the band members - Sam Rhys James is from Aber; the others from further afield in Wales, including Hannah Daniel well-known to followers of Hinterland as the character DS Siân Rhys; “The Session” a New Orleans jazz band visited Aber in summer 2015. Their trumpet-player/singer Steve Lands is from New Orleans, the double-bass player Dan Swana is from London.

Alan's interest in live music is long-standing, starting with folk-music gigs in Birmingham (where he grew up) to rock concerts in London where he lived in the late 1960s. He regularly attends gigs and photographs musicians and singers in the Aberystwyth area. He has played bass guitar (and sometimes sung) with a number of bands over the years.
