The Bench is an exhibition of photographs by Billie Charity showing now at Thru The Lens Gallery in Hay-on Wye
Based in Hay-on-Wye, photographer Billie Charity decided to make a small bench situated just outside Thru The Lens Gallery as the subject of an ongoing series of photographs as it plays host to locals and visitors taking a break from walking in the town.
“Every time I walked past the bench I would look to see who was there, using whatever I had on me at the time - my phone, my Canon 5D or my little Sony mirrorless camera.”
A zine co-published by the photographer and the gallery accompanies the exhibition and is available to purchase in the gallery or via its online shop. Prints of the work can also be purchased.
Billie’s Y TRAETHAU (THE BEACHES) work shot on beaches around the wales coast during the summer of 2020 was exhibited in the gallery in April this year, accompanied by zine of the same name published by ADM Publishing and a self-published book on the project titled ‘A Strange New World’.
The Bench is the fourth exhibition staged at Thru The Lens since early 2020, with owner Andra Milsome and co-curator Billie battling through the disruption caused by COVID-19 opening restrictions to show work by local photographers.
