To celebrate the launch of Ffoto Newport - a new photography gallery space in the city centre - the founders are presenting Ron McCormick’s humorous depictions of the Carrot and the Fly in a new exhibition from his project and book titled Carrot Fly.

Occasionally described as “carrotica”  this exhibition is sure to surprise and amuse the viewer in equal measures.

Situated in one of the units in the Market Arcade just off High Street (close to the old Newport Market), Ffoto Newport aims to be a destination for photographers and visitors to see photography in the city.

Newport has had a long association with photography going back over 100 years with an international reputation for its School of Documentary Photography established in the 1970’s by the well-known Magnum photographer, David Hurn. Opening soon, Ffoto Newport aims to showcase the work of photographers associated with Newport and Wales as a whole.
— Ieuan Berry, Gallery Founder

Photographer Ron McCormick is helping with the setup of the gallery in preparation for the opening. Asked about the impetus for the Carrot Fly work, he states:

The most beautiful of root vegetables the Carrot may be likened to Venus, although at times, it may be best compared with that other icon of feminine beauty, the Willendorf woman. A carrot can make you smile and even blush when faced with their naked beauty. Ancient Greeks called the carrot a philtron ("Iove charm") and today the carrot still carries a subtle erotic potency.

On the other hand the Fly is universally detested and must rank as the most hated of all insects, a carrier of numerous diseases and universally loathed. Ron McCormick's photographs echo the pestilential horror that their presence invokes while at the same time paying a quiet homage to their evolutionary persistence.

CARROT FLY is available as a double book published by Communimedia
