Photography of Cardiff’s Butetown and Tiger Bay from the 1970’s - 1990’s by brothers Anthony & Simon Campbell in Penarth’s The Turner House Gallery.

Previously home to Ffotogallery for twenty years, Turner House is now managed by Penarth Town Council as an arts and creative hub for the communities of Penarth and beyond. The INSIDE OUT exhibition is a collaboration between the gallery and @cardiffumbrella Art Collective who have curated the show. It presents black and white photographs of Butetown by local brothers Anthony and Simon Campbell spanning the 1970s to the 1990s with a focus on the people who made up the Bay community.

Motivated by the predominance of outsiders’ images of the area formerly known as Tiger Bay, the brothers sought to redress the balance. Inside Out documents a period of great physical change and celebrates the continuity of spirit and the communities that lived through it. The people depicted are friends, family and local characters that are named in the captions. Images from different years are juxtaposed; for example, a photo of the first Bute Carnival in the mid-1970s next to one from the 1990s, creating a timeless and authentic portrait of a community.

Simon Campbell (b 1956) has always stayed close to his roots in Cardiff and his creative and artistic bent has been deeply immersed within his own community. He was a founder member of Butetown Photography Group and the Black Film and Video Workshop in Wales, which produced several films screened at film festivals around the UK.

There is an exhibition opening Friday 25 February 6 -8pm with the photographers.

INSIDE OUT runs 24 February – 20 March 2022

Gallery opening times: Thursday – Sunday 10am - 4.30pm
