An exhibition of documentary photographs on ‘people’ curated from the National Collection at The National Library of Wales is on show at the Riverside gallery in Haverfordwest.
The National Library of Wales houses over 1 million photographs connected to Wales, which range from works by pioneering photographers from the earliest days of photography to portfolios by contemporary practitioners of the art. People: Photographs from the National Collection exhibition has a focus on the unique art of documentary photography.
In People: Photographs from the National Collection, visitors can expect to see two of Jack Lowe’s Lifeboat Station Project images, including the Tenby Lifeboat crew alongside other black and white documentary images by photographers such as David Hurn, Marian Delyth and Philip Jones Griffiths that capture and celebrate the spirit of every day folk. Jack’s image of St Davids Old and New Boathouses will also feature in the exhibition Pembrokeshire: Past and Present, which highlights Pembrokeshire’s history as well as its continuing charm, together with iconic works by artists and writers such as Gwen and Augustus John, Waldo Williams, Claudia Williams and Graham Sutherland.
Both exhibitions will run until 23rd April 2022.
“These images capture the beauty, humour, joy, despair and determination of human spirit. Whether they are images of normal people going about their everyday lives, or an account of an important historical event, each photograph is a snapshot in time to be preserved for future generations. ”
