I am a Documentarist.
I have spent a lifetime recording British society, challenging the status quo by working in a collaborative way to capture extraordinary aspects of ordinary life, principally through photography but also with audio recordings and short movies.
— Daniel Meadows

Studying photography alongside Martin Parr at Manchester Polytechnic in the early 1970's, Daniel Meadows has remained passionate about social documentary photography, education and storytelling ever since. His photography archive, held in the Library of Birmingham, is an important record of British society through the 1970's and 80's - and his influence can be seen in contemporary photography in the UK and further afield.

Kick back and listen to our full conversation with Daniel below.

Ffoton also captured a video segment with Daniel where he describes the influential work he did on Digital Storytelling whilst working with the BBC and Cardiff School of Journalism. Watch this special video below...

Rwy’n berson dogfen.
Rwy ‘di treulio fy mywyd yn cofnodi’r gymdeithas Brydeinig, herio’r ‘status quo’ ac yn gweithio ar bob agwedd o fywyd cyffredin yn bennaf trwy ffotograffiaeth ond hefyd trwy sain a ffilmiau byr.
— Daniel Meadows

Fe astudiodd Daniel Meadows law yn llaw a Martin Parr ym mholytechnig Manceinion yn y '70 cynnar. Mae e wedi dal yn ddryw yw waith fel ffotograffydd dogfennol cymdeithasol, addysg a'i gariad o adrodd stori

Cedwi'r ei archif personol yn llyfrgell Birmingham ac mae'n record bwysig o fywyd cymdeithasol Prydain yn y '70au a'r '80au.

Rob Hudson and Emyr Young.

Rob Hudson is a photographer based in Cardiff and was our first interviewee as part of the Ffoton project. We interviewed him on location at BlackMill wood near Bridgend that inspired his enigmatic and poetical work on Mametz Wood: a battle where so many Welsh Soldiers perished during WW1.

It took Rob about 18 months to complete the project and he drew inspiration not only from the wood but from David Jones' 'In Parenthesis' an epic poem about the poet's recollections of World War 1 and the battle of Mametz Wood.

Y mae Rob Hudson yn ffotograffydd sydd yn byw ac yn gweithio yng Nghaerdydd. Rob oedd ein cyfweliad cyntaf a'r unig ffotograffyd inni gyfweld ar leoliad mewn coedwig ger Penybont. Dyma'r lle wnaeth ysbrydoli ei waith enigmatig a barddonol ei naws, 'Coedwig Mametz'. Y mae'r gwaith yn ingol ei naws ac yn ymgais i gyfleu'r frwydr lle lladdwyd cynifer o Gymry yn ystod y rhyfel byd cyntaf.

Bu Rob yn creu'r gwaith ym a dros gyfnod o ddeunaw mis ac fe dynnodd ysbrydoliaeth nid yn unig o goedwig Melin Du Penybont ond o waith David Jones' 'In Parenthesis' sef hanes y rhyfel a brwydr Mametz Wood trwy lygad bardd.

TODAY... "THE WORST THING IS THE ABILITY TO TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES"

Making a return to Wales from his home in New York to oversee preparations and the launch of his Retrospective exhibition "Chalkie Davies Photographer: The NME Years" in National Museum Wales (running May 9 to September 6, 2015), Sully-native Chalkie kindly took time out of a hectic schedule for a couple of hours to talk with Ffoton Wales.

Respected for his images of famous pop and rock artists from the 1970's and 80's for publications The NME and The Face, Chalkie created some special distinctive work in a special period of music history - and toured with Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney and Thin Lizzy .

But we mutually chose to spend a couple of fascinating hours talking photography, lighting, Art and mentoring new talent. Enjoy.

Heddiw... "Y peth gwaetha yw'r gallu i dynnu lot o luniau"

Mae Chalkie Davies wedi dychwelyd o'i gartref yn Efrog Newydd i oruchwylio creu a lansio ei arddangosfa Chalkie Davies: ei stamp ar yr NME. Bydd ei arddangosfa yw gweld yn Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Cymru o Fai'r9fed tan y 6ed o Fedi 2015. Mae gwreiddiau Chalkie yn Sili Penarth a diolch yw haelioni er y cyfnod prysur cafodd Ffoton Cymru/Wales dwy awr o'i gwmni yn ddiweddar.

Y mae parch mawr yw luniau du a gwyn o artistiaid roc a pop y 70'ai a'r 80'ai. Fe ymddangosodd lluniau Chalkie Davies yn yr NME a'r Face yn ystod y cyfnod arbennig hwnnw yn hanes cerddoriaeth. Fe deithiodd gyda'r mawrion Elvis Costello Paul McCartney a Thin Lizzy.

Treilliasom dwy awr ddifyr yn ei gwmni yn trafod ffotograffiaeth, goleuo, celf a mentora talent newydd. Mwynhewch!
