ADLAIS/ECHO – Tracey Leonard & Lucy Jane Purrington
Visual reflections of life in the welsh valleys in 202
This exhibition visually represents two very distinctly different voices of the Rhondda. Not only are these voices are unified and amplified by each other through visual echoes of the local landscape, they expand the visual language of the welsh valleys to depict what is the current reality for those living and working here.
Tracey Leonard and Lucy Jane Purrington are based in the Rhondda and although this new show echoes their experiences of this unique landscape and its close knit community, their work has an overwhelmingly universal appeal and significance. From the hauntingly surreal depictions found in Purrington’s work to the arresting photo documentary of Leonard’s black and white imagery, this exhibition has so much to offer viewers looking for something more than other ‘lockdown art’ experiences.

By the photographers:
“The images included in the exhibition have been captured to document the Rhondda, its community and sociology in 2020. Some moments captured echo the response of local events such as the flooding and the campaign to save the 24 hour accident and emergency facilities at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. Other images capture the local response to a global pandemic.”
“These images (all shot in the Rhondda valleys) have been curated together as a response to the strange and difficult events of 2020; from the isolation of lockdown to the more specific events felt more closely by residents of the area.
I combine my surrounding landscapes of the Rhondda valleys alongside fabric in various colours, shapes and sculptural forms to set a topographic scene of emotion. Deliberately untitled and unlabelled, the viewer is encouraged to interpret and insert their own emotions and narratives to each photograph.”
