Paul Reas has a long career in UK photography during which he has worked as an editorial and advertising photographer before moving into education. Respected for his gritty documentation of the UK’s working class and consumerism, Paul’s colour work is considered part of the new movement in colour during the late 1980’s and early 90’s along with others such as Anna Fox and Paul Graham. Reas was one of the first photographers to be commissioned by Ffotogallery to contribute to The Valleys Project.

Paul has recently published Fables of Faubus, a 30-year retrospective photobook on his work and the title giving a hint to his love of music.

Currently course leader on the respected Documentary Photography course founded by David Hurn in Newport (now delivered at the University of South Wales course in Cardiff), Ffoton are delighted to bring the two friends together for an exclusive conversation on Paul’s work and career.

Ffoton’s Emyr Young in conversation with Joanne Coates - a documentary photographer and founder of Lens Think - a new Social Enterprise based in the north of England promoting diversity in the creative arts. Lens Think organises socials and pop-up exhibitions in locations in and around Yorkshire and helps share artist opportunities.

As a working photographer, Joanne is interested in working life and class inequality - a topic she is passionate about in the profession of photography and evident in her varied portfolio of personal and commissioned work. Her work has been published by Vice, the BBC, The Telegraph and The Guardian.

Ffoton is delighted to present a conversation with the very talented and highly respected social and society photographer Dafydd Jones talking to our guest interviewer Martin Parr.

Having studied Fine Art before moving to photography, Dafydd’s professional career has spanned over forty years capturing exclusive behind the scenes images of the rich, famous and entitled in both British and New York societies working for Tatler Magazine and many newspapers. In this stimulating conversation on his career and work, Dafydd discusses his ongoing love of photography and why his extensive archive is now his focus in generating income.

Ffoton talks with professional photographer Brian David Stevens about his career and many projects. Brian is based in London but his parents hail from the Welsh valleys where they still reside.

Covering many personal projects in his career, Brian spends long periods of time photographing people and places with an artistic eye and great sensitivity. His well known "They that are left..." : 'Remembrance' portraits of War Veterans’ was produced over a ten year period, and his more recent ‘Beachy Head’ beautifully explores a UK landscape well known for its iconic chalk cliffs but their height also making the area one of the world’s most notorious for suicide.

Brian's portrait of Wilko Johnson is held in the National Portrait Gallery and portrait of Jock Scot in the National Galleries of Scotland Collection.

With a lifetime interest in photography, Homer Sykes made his professional start as a UK photojournalist in the 1970's.
But rather than be a Lemming chasing current new stories, Homer chose to leave photojournalism and document the traditional festivals, events and customs across England and the wider UK and continues to do so nearly 50 years on.

Ffoton had the pleasure of talking with Homer about his long career, his unique and extensive photographic archive and the various methods he exploits to promote and publish his work. In this final part of our discussion we focus on Homer's book publishing, his love of working with Café Royal Books, his use of Social Media and the competitive nature of professional photojournalism.

One of Homer's oldest and most well known series of photographs is the 'Biddy Boys' - an ancient festival celebrating the Celtic Saint Brigid in Killorglin, Co Kerry in Southern Ireland. Hailing from Swansea and regarded as a legend in world skateboard photography, Skin Phillips has a career in the sport spanning over 30 years.

He’s worked as a photographer and had his images featured in some of the world's leading skate magazines, been editor-in-chief of Transworld magazine and the skate team manager at powerhouse brand Adidas.

Now spending less time in San Diego in California and coming back to his home town of Swansea, we grabbed the opportunity to talk with Skin along with fellow-skater and photographer Dan Wood.

Ffoton had the pleasure of talking with Welsh photographer, educator and, from 2017 the Honorary Research Fellow at the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff, Paul Cabuts.

With a long career in photography education in Wales and having returned after two years as Director of the Institute of Photography at Falmouth University, Paul is a respected authority on the development of photography in Wales. We discuss the history and education of photography in Wales to the present day; Paul's book on the legacy of W. Eugene Smith's work in Wales in the 1950's; and his current research at Museum Wales which includes the work of David Hurn.

Michael Christopher Brown is an American photojournalist and documentary photographer who immersed himself in travel and covering foreign assignments - including major conflict zones - professionally from 2006. Michael has been a contributing photographer at National Geographic since 2005 and joined Magnum Photos as a nominee in 2013 and was an associate from 2015 until June 2017.

Probably his best known work to date is his monograph 'Libyan Sugar' which won the Paris Photo First Photobook Award and the International Center of Photography's 2017 Infinity Award for Artist's Book. This unique book demonstrated his skill in using primarily an iPhone to photograph the Libyan Revolution from 2011-2012 where he covered several battles, was ambushed several times and injured twice. He survived the same mortar attack that killed his close friend and photojournalist colleague Tim Hetherington.

Ffoton spoke to Michael in early 2018 during a trip to the UK to plan his next book on Cuba where, as part of his 'Paradiso' project, he's been documenting the electronica music and youth scene in Havana. Whilst working there, he witnessed the national grieving and had exclusive access to the funeral cortege of the late leader Fidel Castro as it travelled from Havana to his grave in Santiago. Michael is currently working on a large documentary project on native Americans.

We were pleased and grateful to have Professor Richard Sambrook conduct the interview - an experienced journalist and ex-Director of News at the BBC who oversaw their coverage of the 2003 Iraq conflict. And thanks also to Martin and his team who kindly accommodated us for the recording on a busy day at The Martin Parr Foundation in Bristol.

After studying photography at Berkshire College of Art in the mid 1960's, Bernard Mitchell began his long career as a photojournalist working for Thomson Regional Newspapers. Bernard returned to Swansea many years later and in 2003 studied for a Masters degree in photography at Swansea Metropolitan University.

Back in 1966 as a student, he started a project to document the circle of painters, writers and musicians who had associated with Dylan Thomas in their homes and studios but that project extended to cover the wider arts, literature and photography communities across Wales and continues to this day. A new book titled 'Pieces of a Jigsaw' published in late 2017 presents a selection of images from his ongoing Welsh Arts Archive project.

Bernard gifted his archive of photographs of artists and writers of Wales to the Richard Burton Archive at Swansea University in 2016.

David Wilson is a self-taught landscape photographer based in Pembrokeshire who moved to photography full-time in 2008 after a lifetime love of photography and a desire to leave his day job as a civil servant.

David has worked commercially in recent years with Fine Art print sales and his landscape work being published in a number of books in collaboration with Welsh publisher Graffeg - including the more recent 'Hinterland' with input from the producers of the successful S4C TV crime drama.

Y mae David Wilson yn ffotograffydd tirlun a ddysgodd y grefft ar ei liwt ei hun ac mae'n byw yn Sir Benfro. Cychwynnodd ar ei yrfa ffotograffig yn 2008 ar ôl gadael ei waith fel gwas sifil er roedd ganddo gariad tuag at ffotograffiaeth ar hyd ei oes.

Y mae David yn gweithio fel ffotograffydd masnachol yn gwerthu lluniau celf gain yn ogystal â chyhoeddi nifer o lyfrau mewn cydweithrediad a'r cyhoeddwr Graffeg. Y mae ei lyfr diweddaraf Hinterland wedi ei gyhoeddi mewn cydweithrediad gyda chynhyrchwyr y gyfres lwyddiannus ar S4C.

Having dropped plans for a career in Engineering and instead making a start in the rough and tumble of photojournalism, self-taught photographer Simon Ridgway now specialises in the exciting genre of Unit Stills photography in Television and Movies. His work for the BBC and it's successful new Doctor Who series in recent years has been seen all over the world.

Ffoton sat down with Simon for a fascinating conversation reflecting on his career, what it takes to be part of a tight studio production team and his plans for the future.

Simon Regan is a Cardiff-based advertising photographer with over twenty five years experience in stills and, more recently, professional video production for a wide range of commercial clients.

We sat down with Simon alongside friend and fellow photographer Glenn Edwards to discuss his career, staying competitive in the advertising photography genre and extending his skills (and passion) for printing photographs and fine art for himself and others.

London-based portrait photographer Harry Borden has captured many celebrities during his career - including Robin Williams, Ewan McGregor, Jamie Oliver, Tony Blair and Margaret Thatcher.

Ffoton were delighted to bring Harry to Wales to give a guest talk in May 2017 and also welcomed the opportunity to sit down for an in-depth conversation on his love of and approach to photography.

Studying photography alongside Martin Parr at Manchester Polytechnic in the early 1970's, Daniel Meadows has remained passionate about social documentary photography, education and storytelling ever since. His photography archive, held in the Library of Birmingham, is an important record of British society through the 1970's and 80's - and his influence can be seen in contemporary photography in the UK and further afield.

Claire Thomas is a photojournalist hailing from Carmarthenshire but now travelling the world capturing images that document human rights issues and conflict zones. Self-taught, Claire's photography has been featured in numerous publications including National Geographic Magazine, Geographical Magazine and Al Jazeera English.

Claire is one of a rare breed of young female photojournalists working in dangerous conflict zones such as the Middle East and Palestine. Ffoton welcomed the opportunity to meet her during a short visit back in Wales before setting off for assignments in Iraq.

Y mae Claire Thomas yn newyddiadurwraig  ffotograffig yn hanu o Sir Gaerfyrddin ac yn teithio'r byd yn tynnu lluniau sy'n dogfennu materion yn ymwneud a hawliau dynol ac mewn ardaloedd lle mae gwrthdaro a rhyfel. American I.C. (Chuck) Rapport had a successful career as a professional photojournalist working for many notable publications known for their outstanding photo essays, such as Life Magazine, Paris Match, Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated and more.

Whilst best known here in Wales for his assignment for LIFE Magazine covering the aftermath of the Aberfan disaster in 1966, Ffoton sat down for a conversation with Chuck to reflect on his start in photojournalism in the late 1950's and experiences through his career. What a great storyteller!
