When we started Ffoton almost 2 years ago (Tim Collier was our first conversation released back in February 2015) getting introduced to photographers in Wales was limited via a few events or exhibition openings - and there was little or no regular social gatherings. It's now 2017 and not a lot has changed!
So we've decided to build on the positive response we had to our 3 months of Urbanwales activities last year and start a regular monthly meet-up for photographers - professional, enthusiast and student - to come together for informal chat, talks, drinks and winks!
Some months will have a guest speaker and some won't. Every month will have some live news announcements and, as a way of discovering new photographers and work, we want to encourage you to bring along at least one favourite Photobook from your own collection to inspire a few others attending that night!
January 2017 Social
To kick off our first January event as many photographers contemplate new personal projects and students prepare to pull their final shows together, we've invited Ben Blyth, a final year photography student at the University of South Wales, to present his photography and short documentary film focussing on the lives of Cardiff’s homeless community. His film has attracted a considerable amount of Media attention in recent weeks. Ben will also talk of his stills work on Instagram where he has been building relationships with commercial Brands to reach wider audiences. There will be the opportunity for a Q&A with Ben and a wider discussion on selecting and developing themes for personal photography projects.
The Guest talk starts 8pm
We'll also be announcing Ffoton's next new project for 2017 - a collaboration we are VERY excited about and want to invite more photographers to participate!
We've decided to stick with our previously arranged venue for the first event next week:
Upstairs in Dempseys Bar
(opposite Cardiff Castle's front clock tower)
15 Castle Street, Cardiff, CF10 1BS
Access is via the Dempseys Bar front entrance. We'll be upstairs and all we ask is £2.50 per person to help cover venue hire costs.
Live music fans will recognise the venue as the famous 'Four Bars' - a renowned Jazz venue in Wales and the South West for decades but, sadly, now earmarked for closure in February by owners Brains Brewery. We'll announce our February and future venue at this event.
To make it easy for your diary, our this and future Ffoton Photography Socials will take place:
3rd Thursday of each month, 7.30 - 11pm
