David Hurn is still working, photographing and publishing at the age of 81 years and is regarded as one of Britain's most important reportage photographers.

A self-taught photographer who began his career in 1955 as an assistant at the Reflex Agency, he gained his reputation with his reportage of the 1956 Hungarian revolution. David became an associate member of Magnum Photo in 1965 and a full member in 1967. Here in Wales, he set up the famous School of Documentary Photography in Newport in 1973 where he remained for 17 years.

We met with David following the publication of a new book 'The 1960s: Photographed by David Hurn' published by Reel Art Press which demonstrates the breadth and strength of iconic images that defined the period. This first part of our in-depth conversation covers David's route into photography, individual style and 'Authorship', being a professional photographer, projects he has covered - including the Aberfan tragedy in the South Wales valleys.

Rebecca Thomas, Cardiff 2015.

2015 has proven to be a whirlwind of activity and experience for up and coming photographer Rebecca Thomas. Although she's still studying for her photography Degree, Rebecca 'Sunflower Photography' keeps herself immersed in a wide variety of her own photography projects: portraits, shooting bands for Virgin and, more recently, spotted and mentored by renowned 70's Music photographer and Welshman Chalkie Davies.

Ffoton chats with Rebecca on her photography journey so far on a sunny Autumn day by Cardiff's Roath Park Lake. Excuse the ducks and geese!

We're also delighted to help showcase promising new Welsh talent like Rebecca as the fourth and final guest photographer in our month-long exhibition at The Littleman Coffee Co. in Cardiff during October 2015.

SIR BENFRO, MEHEFIN 2015

Chris Tancock at home in Pembrokeshire. Image © Brian Carroll

This is the second and final part of our conversation with Chris. You can still listen to part one.

"I'm a black and white photographer", says Chris Tancock. Based near the beautiful small City of St Davids in Pembrokeshire, Chris currently works within a five mile radius of his small family cottage which also hosts a gallery with a selection of his work. Popular with collectors and respected by Landscape photographers, the scenes he captures are near-timeless and far more nuanced with the inclusion of workers of the land and details of flora and fauna.

Chris earns his living from his photography: limited edition prints and hand-crafted collectors Folios of his work are available via his website. His intense passion and commitment to his projects is evident from this Ffoton Wales recorded conversation - so much so that we lost track of time and immersed ourselves in a fascinating discussion requiring two parts! We challenge anyone listening to both parts to not reflect on their own approach to their photography projects and series' of images.

KEITH MORRIS YN SGWRSIO GYDAG EMYR YOUNG
ABERYSTWYTH, CERIDIGION, MEHEFIN 2015

Keith Morris, Aberystwyth. © Brian Carroll

Keith Morris is a commercial photographer living and working in the seaside town of Aberystwyth. His main area of focus is the commercial and news market, deriving a significant amount of income from stock photography. Keith uses his expertise, knowledge and understanding of the market to great effect. By his own admission he does not travel far and works primarily within a 20 mile radius of Aberystwyth and so successful is he at the commercial end of stock, he now runs courses on how to deliver it in an increasingly difficult and competitive area of photography.

His personal work is also geared with the commercial market in mind: he has a long-held passion for working with actors and dancers in theatre and, if the opportunity arises, stills photography for television series are also another source of income. Telling stories is part and parcel of Keith’s raison d'être and he enjoys creating scenarios using actors and models but always with the commercial market in mind. His enthusiasm for his trade is boundless. Sit back and enjoy Keith at his loudest best!

Y mae Keith Morris yn ffotograffydd masnachol sydd yn byw ac yn gweithio yn nhref glan y môr Aberystwyth. Prif ffocws ei waith masnachol yw ffotograffiaeth stoc a newyddion. Mae rhan sylweddol o'i incwm yn dod o'r ddwy ffynhonnell yma. Y mae Keith yn defnyddio ei arbenigedd, a gwybodaeth o'r farchnad mewn modd effeithiol iawn. Nid yw Keith yn teithio yn bell o'i gynefin a cymaint ei arbenigedd o fyd ffotograffiaeth stoc mae e'n rhedeg cyrsiau ar sut i dynnu lluniau mewn byd cystadleuol iawn.

Mae gogwydd masnachol ar ei waith personol ac mae'n gweithio ym myd theatr a dawns ac os bydd cyfle yn codi mae'n hoff o weithio ym myd teledu a ffilm.

Adrodd straeon yw raison d'être Keith ac mae e'n hoff iawn o greu senarios gan ddefnyddio actorion, dawnswyr a modelau ond trwy lygaid masnachol. Mae brwdfrydedd Keith yn ddiben draw. Eisteddwch yn gyffyrddus a gwrandewch ar afiaith y ffotograffydd diddorol yma!

Rob Hudson is a photographer based in Cardiff and was our first interviewee as part of the Ffoton project. We interviewed him on location at BlackMill wood near Bridgend that inspired his enigmatic and poetical work on Mametz Wood: a battle where so many Welsh Soldiers perished during WW1.

It took Rob about 18 months to complete the project and he drew inspiration not only from the wood but from David Jones' 'In Parenthesis' an epic poem about the poet's recollections of World War 1 and the battle of Mametz Wood.

Y mae Rob Hudson yn ffotograffydd sydd yn byw ac yn gweithio yng Nghaerdydd. Rob oedd ein cyfweliad cyntaf a'r unig ffotograffyd inni gyfweld ar leoliad mewn coedwig ger Penybont. Bu Rob yn creu'r gwaith ym a dros gyfnod o ddeunaw mis ac fe dynnodd ysbrydoliaeth nid yn unig o goedwig Melin Du Penybont ond o waith David Jones' 'In Parenthesis' sef hanes y rhyfel a brwydr Mametz Wood trwy lygad bardd.

TODAY... "THE WORST THING IS THE ABILITY TO TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES"

Making a return to Wales from his home in New York to oversee preparations and the launch of his Retrospective exhibition "Chalkie Davies Photographer: The NME Years" in National Museum Wales (running May 9 to September 6, 2015), Sully-native Chalkie kindly took time out of a hectic schedule for a couple of hours to talk with Ffoton Wales.

Respected for his images of famous pop and rock artists from the 1970's and 80's for publications The NME and The Face, Chalkie created some special distinctive work in a special period of music history - and toured with Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney and Thin Lizzy .

But we mutually chose to spend a couple of fascinating hours talking photography, lighting, Art and mentoring new talent. Enjoy.

Matt Botwood is a professional landscape photographer based in a remote part of the Brecon Beacons.

As someone who scouts and works daily in the landscape where he has based his family home, Matt can justifiably be referred to as a true 'Landscape Photographer's Photographer' and has been recognised by his peers as such in the 2014 Landscape Photographer of the Year Awards.

Ffoton asked photographer Rob Hudson to join us on our trip to Matt's home in early January 2015 and the resulting conversation between the two is fascinating listening for anyone interested in intensive project-based landscape and woodland photography.

We spoke to Jon in the late stages of production of his documentary on Valleys photography - show on BBC2 Wales in late March 2015. As ever, Jon was open and frank about his passion for photography in and of Wales.

Mae Jon yn ffotograffydd masnachol a dogfennol sydd yn byw a gweithio yn ne Cymru.

Mae Jon yn hoff o ffotograffiaeth y '70au a'r '80au  Mae e wedi ailddarganfod lluniau hanesyddol o ardal Caerdydd a'r cymoedd ac mae'r gwaith yma yn cael ei adlewyrch yn ei waith personol.

Fe wnaethon ni siarad â Jon tra roedd ynghanol cynhyrchiad yn dogfenni ffotograffiaeth y cymoedd a ymddangosodd ddiwedd mis Mawrth 2015. Mae agwedd Jon tuag at ffotograffiaeth yng Nghymru yn ddigyfaddawd ac heb flewyn ar dafod ac fe glywch hynny yn y sgwrs.

Keith Davies

IN CONVERSATION WITH Brian Carroll & EMYR YOUNG.
CARDIFF, SOUTH WALES, January 2015

Yn sgwrsio a Brian Carroll ac Emyr Young
Caerdydd, De Cymru, Ionawr 2015

Keith Davies is a Cardiff-based commercial and advertising photographer.

He studied photography in college then moved to London and worked as an assistant with many talented commercial photographers before changing course and following a course in design and art direction. His love for photography never left him and he returned to the medium with the advent of digital.

We spoke to Keith in his new studio and discussed the challenges and opportunities in a commercial photographic studio and his views on the skills required to be successful.

Y mae Keith Davies yn ffotograffydd hysbysebion a masnach yng Nghaerdydd.

Fe astudiodd ffotograffiaeth yn y coleg ac yna wedi graddio gweithio fel cynorthwyydd i nifer o ffotograffwyr masnachol talentog yn Llundain. Er ei hoffter o ffotograffiaeth penderfynodd newid byd a dilyn gyrfa fel cynllunydd a chyfarwyddwr celf. Yr oedd ei hoffter o ffotograffiaeth yn rhan o'i gyfansoddiad a dychwelodd i'r maes gyda'r datblygiad o ffotograffiaeth ddigidol.

Siaradom a Keith yn ei stiwdio newydd a thrafod yr her a'r cyfleoedd o weithio mewn stiwdio fasnachol a'i sylwadau hefyd ar y sgiliau angenrheidiol sydd angen i fod yn llwyddiannus yn y maes.

Light, solitude and landscape are the amalgam that make Tim Collier tick as a photographer. His ability to see is second to none and his work on the landscape of Wales is stunning and extensive.

Nature has always played an important part in Tim's photography and bird photography has dominated his recent output. His understanding of birds is reflected in his sublime, remarkable and beautiful photographs.

Tim is a superb practitioner in many aspects of photography and Ffoton is proud to announce him as our 1st featured photographer.

Golau, unigedd a'r tirlun yw'r cyfuniad sydd wrth wraidd Tim Collier y ffotograffydd. Mae ei allu i weld yr hyn sydd o'i gwmpas yn ail i neb a'i ddelweddau helaeth o Gymru yn rhagorol.

Mae natur a'r cysylltiad ysbrydol a'r hyn sydd o'i gwmpas yn rhan annatod o waith Tim.

Yn ddiweddar mae tynnu lluniau adar wedi dwyn ei fryd. Mae ei ddealltwriaeth ohonynt yn wych ac yn cael ei fynegi trwy ei luniau rhyfeddol.

Heb os mae Tim Collier yn ffotograffydd o fri ac mae Ffoton yn hynod falch mae ef yw ein ffotograffydd gwadd cyntaf.
